Mont Crum

Mont Crum, 63, of Century, Florida, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital on August 22, 2023. He was born to Thomas and Ellen Crum on May 5, 1960 at Holden, West Virginia. Preceded in death by father, sister Karen Crum, nephews Lance Farley and Tylor Crum. Those left behind to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 40 years, Teresa Starr Crum; daughter, Jennifer Whetsell; brother, Robert Crum; sisters, Sheila and Ron Adkins, Melanie Crum, April and Wes Hatfield and Karen Crum; granddaughters, Breonna and Trent Whetsell, Kalyn and Robbie Arnold, Hannah Whetsell; great-grandchildren, Teagan and Beckhem Clarke, Myra and Adan Estrada, and Leah Arnold; nieces and nephews, Lance Farley, Bobbie Jo Crum, Cody Crum, Josh Adkins, Erica Whitt, Billy Ryan Gartin, Lindsey Gartin, Jarrett Crum, Taylor Hatfield, Jade and Tylor Crum; mother-in-law Sarah and Robert Schultz; brothers-in-law, James and Marjorie Starr and Millard and Beverley Starr; sisters-in-law, Mildred and Lee Van Dyke and Carol Starr; nieces and nephews, Christie Cichon, Bud Hatfield, Sarah-Ann Rueda, James Starr, Michelle Deal, Jenny Cooper, Christian Starr, Alex Starr, Robert Van Dyke, and Terry Van Dyke. Mont started his Christian journey in 1970 at the Delbarton Church of God under the tutelage of Rev. W. H. Compton. He was a faithful member of his church and served as a Sunday school teacher and bus driver. The nieces and nephews were filled with excitement as they looked forward to the cherished Christmas Eve tradition: Mont narrating the Nativity of Jesus Christ, the story about that baby in the barn (as they would say), on Christmas Eve. Mont was a talented and hardworking individual who pursued careers in both coal mining and the military. Leaving the day of his high school graduation, Mont’s military career started in 1978. He served his country in the United States Army as a Military Police, Power Generation Equipment Repairer, and provided personal security and safety escort for a Commanding General during travel to the forward operating bases throughout the Persian Gulf War. Military Awards include but not limited to: National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service with two Bronze Stars, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. Mont was a decorated soldier who served his country with distinction. His awards and decorations are a testament to his dedication and commitment to duty. Retirement opened the door for Mont and Teresa to begin a new life chapter in Florida. They treasured their time together traveling, with their daughter, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren. Mont’s memory will be a source of inspiration, for his role as a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather left an enduring impact on the lives he touched. Funeral services will be held at Chafin Funeral Home in Delbarton on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The rendering of Military Funeral Honors presentation will be held at 12. Burial will follow at the Sparks Cemetery in Yellow Creek, Kentucky. Robert Crum, April Hatfield, Ron Adkins, Wes Hatfield, Billy Ryan Gartin, Josh Adkins, Jarrett Crum and Cody Crum will serve as pallbearers.
