Debra Ann Ooten Sturgill, 67, of Turkey Creek, KYentered into eternal rest and peace with her family gathered around her while a patient at the Highland ARH Hospital of Prestonsburg, KY. Debbie suffered from a lingering illness and endured great sorrows as she battled to live. The great love she had for her children and grandchildren made her journey worth everything. She was a member of the Duncan Fork United Baptist Church. Debbie was retired from the Mingo County BOE after working more than 34 years as a teacher aid in the Myrtle-Lenore area. She spent many years working with the Lenore Midget league ball teams and cheerleaders. She impacted the youth in her area in a great way. Debbie loved to play cards and board games with her family. She spent many summers at Dewey Lake where canoeing was one of her favorite things to do. She was the beloved “Nana” of our family. Debbie was preceded in death by her parents Dow and Joyce Ooten and her sister and brother in law, Lilly and Gary Jude, Vesta and Virgil Sammons and precious nephew, Micah Sammons. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, John Sturgill and his wife, Shannon of Burnwell, KY, Joyce Ann Sturgill of Turkey Creek, KY, granddaughters, Bella and Stella Sturgill and grandson, Aaron Blake Jude, her caregiver and companion, John Sturgill to whom she was married to for many years. She is also survived by her brother Dow Micah Ooten and special friend, Michael Mitchell whom she loved like a brother, Debbie has one niece, Angel (Shane) Ward, four nephews, Wilburn and Eva Jude, Gary Jude, Tony (Wanda) Sammons and Virgil Sammons Jr. Funeral services will be held at the Duncan Fork United Baptist Church on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 1:00pm with Elder Eddie Layne and Rev. Shane Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Estep Cemetery at Myrtle, WV. Visitation will be at the church Sunday Morning from 11:00am until the start of the funeral at 1:00pm.
