Walter Andrew Harmon, 82, of Red Jacket, WV passed away on April 8th, 2026, leaving behind a story too wild and beautiful to fit into tidy sentences. A wild heart finally at rest. “When I’m gone, don’t cry—just sing.” — Old Mountain Saying Walter was made of grit and laughter, of stubborn fire and soft mercy. The kind of friend who’d give you the shirt off his back without a pause. A good man, through and through—one who took care of his kids the best he could, and who became the kind of grandfather every child dreams of: patient, warm, and full of stories that carried both truth and light. In his youth, he played ball with everything he had—muscle, motion, and spirit—as if chasing something just beyond reach. That fire never went out; it only changed rhythm. In later years, you’d find him singing bluegrass, gospel, and a little bit of blues—songs that carried heat and heartbeat both, the kind that made you believe life still had rhythm worth listening to. He never once pretended to be someone he wasn’t. Walter could barter, build, mend, and make do, turning scraps into fortune and stories into gold. He didn’t follow the world’s rules—he wrote his own—and somehow life always answered him on those same wild terms. He leaves behind a whole tribe of children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren each carrying a piece of that spark—his laugh, his iron will, that courage to live wide open. If he loved you, you felt it. It was in the way he showed up, again and again, no matter the cost. His memory lingers now in the gentle hush of kitchen tables and the echo of porch laughter—voices catching somewhere between joy and remembrance. And somewhere beyond the dust and the noise, he’s back with his Trish—the one who could quiet his storms and draw out that rare, soft smile. Maybe tonight they’re singing again, side by side, two old souls finally finding rest in the same sweet song. A celebration of life will be held at Newtown Pentecostal Church of God on April 25th, 2026 at 11:00AM with Pastor Gary May officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather, to share stories, music, and laughter—because he’d have wanted no solemnity, only celebration. He was one of a kind, and around here, folks will be talking about him for a long, long time. Every legend runs its course eventually—but the stories? The stories live on.
