Jean Carol Varney

Jean Carol Varney, 77, of Delbarton, WV, no longer bound by a sickly body, took ownership of her new home with Jesus on Friday, June 21, 2024, from Logan Regional Medical Center. She was born on July 21, 1946, at home in Wharncliffe, WV, to the late Admiral Dewey and Tressie Morgan Browning. She was of the Church of God faith and was a member of her family’s gospel singing group, The Varney Family, having dedicated many years to the service of the Lord and sharing the good news of God’s grace and mercy through the acceptance of Jesus Christ. She was a retired teacher for the Mingo County Schools system and was married for 57 years to Larry Varney who passed away in January of this year. She lovingly enjoyed the blessings of having 2 children, 3 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren in whose lives she was ever present and ready to lend a helping hand. She was so proud of them all! She never met a stranger and could talk to anyone about how good God is. She loved flowers, hummingbirds, wind chimes, game shows, shopping, and just about any kind of puzzle. No one could beat her cooking, especially her chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, turkey dressing, and homemade biscuits with gravy. She also loved cats, which showed by the fact that she couldn’t seem to turn a stray one away. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her son, Alonzo Nick Varney, and ten siblings: Edward, James, Ted, Troy, Mary Lou, and Betty Joe Browning, Leola Hatfield, Myrtle Gillman, Helen Baisden, and Virginia Mullen. Those who remain to cherish her in memory are her daughter, Vicki and husband Randall Crum; grandchildren, Heather and husband Kenneth Hatfield, Israel Varney, Gabriel and wife Kelsey Varney; great-grandchildren Brittany, Annie, and Brooklyn Dot Waller; and sister Teresa Browning Garrett, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. The visitation is Tuesday, June 25, from 6-9 pm at Chafin Funeral Home in Delbarton, WV, with services at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. The service will be officiated by Bro. Dallas Rife and pallbearers include Israel Varney, Gabriel Varney, Stephen Bragg, Kenneth Hatfield, Sawyer Dennison, and Garrett Forren. Honorary pallbearers are Randall Crum and Donnie Edwards. She will be buried beside her son and husband at the Varney Family Cemetery in Varney, WV.
