George Roger Floyd

George Roger Clark “RC” Floyd was born on April 2, 1945, to Stewart and Rose Varney Floyd. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at 9:57 PM at the Pikeville Medical Center, where he had valiantly fought the past few weeks. RC’s story began at Delbarton, WV. At the age of just one-year-old, his father was tragically killed. His mother was remarried to Ribble C. Hatfield, who raised him as his own. This is why many who knew RC in his early life knew him as RC Hatfield. At the age of seven years old, RC met the love of his life, Miss Viola Martin. Their journey as one started in junior high school and officially began on September 26, 1964. She would remain faithfully by his side for the next 59 years. They were both graduates of Magnolia High School class of 1964. RC worked hard as a coal miner for over 30 years, having worked for Kermit Coal, Wolf Creek, and Marrowbone Development. Together, RC and Viola built a life with their three sons. It was RC’s greatest joy to spend time with his family. From vacations in Tennessee to flea markets, camping, and fishing trips, he made sure his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews had wonderful memories of their childhood. His love for photography has given his family and friends pictures to always help them remember those special times. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Grethel Rebar and Rush Floyd. He and Viola also have six “angel babies,” whom he now joins in Heaven. Those left behind to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 59 years, Viola Martin Floyd; his sons and their wives, Randy & Sheila Floyd of Chesapeake, OH, Dwayne & Stacey Floyd and Darrell & Janis Floyd, all of Delbarton, WV; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished until his last days. He also leaves behind his sister Joyce Browning of Delbarton, WV; his brother Lynn (Rita) Hatfield of Dandridge, TN; brother-in-law Roland (Shirley) of Delbarton, WV; sisters-in-law Opel (Roger) Wallace of Ragland, WV, and Leola Starr of Ligonier, IN; and many beloved nieces and nephews, including Albert (Karen) and Teresa (Tim), who have played a large part in caring for RC. The family wishes to thank the staff of Pikeville Medical Center who went above and beyond to care for RC and the family during this difficult time. In honoring the wishes of RC, cremation will take place. Memorial services will be held on Thursday evening from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel. Service will begin at 7:00 PM with Rev. Mitchell Bias officiating.
